Exodus 25:22, “There I will meet with you…above the mercy seat (Hilasterion).”
Romans 3:25, “God put [Christ] forward as a propitiation (Hilasterion) by His blood, to be received by faith.”

The cherubim around the earthly “throne” of YHWH “watched” in awe as blood was sprinkled on the Hilasterion–the place where YHWH would appear to the His people–for the removal of sin and forestalling of wrath….

And at the cross, YHWH climactically appears to His people in the person of the Son who becomes the blood-covered Hilasterion for our sake.

The true appearing of YHWH, the true awe of the angels, the true covering of sin and removal of wrath happens at the cross.
