Isaiah 44:23, “Sing, O heavens, for YHWH has done it…break forth into singing, O mountains…for YHWH has redeemed Jacob and will display His beauty in Israel.”Matthew 27:51, “And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.”

Since this picture did not grow out of a journal entry and was instead the product of post-reading musings, I’m not going to do a write up today…I want to dive right into work on other dimensions of the ministry rather than take 40 min or so to write up some thoughts.

I will say, however, that I think the connection between these texts is legitimate. Though the primary meaning behind the shattering of the earth in Matthew’s crucifixion account seems to be that Jesus was enduring the “Day of the Lord” in Himself, I don’t think it’s wrong to hear–within the agonized splintering of rocks under the weight of God’s wrath–the shouts of creation to the praise of YHWH who is at that moment redeeming His people and displaying His beauty (glory). Something, at least, to consider.
