Matthew 5:5, “Blessed are the meek, for that shall inherit the earth.”

1 Peter 2:23, “…when He suffered, He did not threaten, but continued entrusting Himself to Him who judges justly…”

At the heart of true meekness is trusting submission to the will and purposes of God. It is not fatalism or a religious sounding term for cowardice, rather it boldly renounces the natural tendency to grab and claw and fight for ourselves and replaces it with faith in YHWH to do what is best.

As with all the Beatitutdes, meekness is displayed with perfection in the life of our Lord and with supreme clarity in His passion. Peter draws this out in the passage quoted above…there is no greater example of meekness than when the King of heaven submits Himself to the Father, refusing to call down a legion of avenging angels and instead “entrust[s] Himself to Him who judges justly…” all the way to death on the cross.

And at the resurrection, the Father—the Just Judge—vindicates the Son, overturning the corrupt ruling of the fallen world by raising Christ from the dead. The risen Crucified One who—because of His meekness—inherits the earth (Matthew 28:18) is the archetype of this Beatitude.
