Psalm 107:30, “…He brought them to their desired haven.” In Psalm 107:23-32, the people of God are pictured as sailors in the midst of a violent storm. They cry to YHWH and He stills the storm and brings them to their desired haven. What I want to focus on this morning is that last part….bringing
Psalm 139:23-24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Test me and know my anxious thoughts! See if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” If we have known God in Christ by the Spirit, we will not try to “hide” any aspect of our life
This animation is the second in an “Easter Trilogy” trilogy considering Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Resurrection Sunday (the animation dealing with Good Friday is here.). In “Holy Saturday,” I try to help us spend some time contemplating the strange and beautiful truth that, in Jesus, YHWH is “God With Us” even in the grave….and

Psalm 19:5, “[The Sun] comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and , like a strong man, runs its course with joy.” The created universe is filled with images and shadows of God in Christ. This is not because creative people invent these connections, but because the actual meaning given to the text
Ps 139:16, “…in your book were written—every one of them—the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” This picture comes from an idea that Courtney shared with me. As I think most of you know, Courtney is an author and has—for the 10 years we’ve been married—always
Psalm 119:45, “…I shall walk in a wide place, for I have sought your precepts.” Our natural mind tells us that doing “whatever we want” is the path of freedom, but that is like the man with an anchor tied around his neck saying that true freedom is to follow wherever his anchor leads….Not
Psalm 109:17-18, “He loved to curse; let curses come upon him!” Galatians 3:13, “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law by becoming a curse for us…” I recently talked to a group about the “imprecatory Psalms” (the Psalms that pray curses down on enemies of YHWH and His people). The question was,

Psalm 104:24, “O YHWH, how manifold are your works, in wisdom you have made them all…” 1 Corinthians 1:23-24, “Christ crucified…[is] the wisdom of God.” The wisdom of God IS Christ crucified. Archetypical wisdom is not merely God the Son abstracted from the man Jesus Christ, rather it is God the Son proclaimed as

Psalm 97:9, “For you, O YHWH, are most high over all the earth; you are exalted for above all gods.” YHWH is exalted above all other gods, and we see this most clearly when YHWH incarnate is lifted up (exalted) as the wrath absorbing sacrifice for His people. The bloody wood of the cross
Psalm 116:3,6, “The snares of death encompassed me; the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me; I suffered distress and anguish…YHWH preserves the simple; when I was brought low, He saved me.” /// When sinking down, in chaos bound And ‘compassed round with fear To Him I look, who chaos took And so, in
Psalm 116:7, “Return, O my soul, to your rest, for YHWH has dealt bountifully with you.” /// Return, my soul, my weary soul To Him who is your rest His wounded side, now glorified, A refuge in His breast
Psalm 116:8-9, “For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling; I will walk before YHWH in the land of the living.” /// My soul, my eyes, my feet, my life Delivered now from woe And with the one who bore my strife I’ll walk in joy,
Psalm 124:7, “We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowlers; the snare is broken and we have escaped.” This was one of the Psalms that was sung during my time at the abbey of Gethsemani last week. As soon as I heard it, the attached image sprang to my mind. I’d
Psalm 43:3-4, “Send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling! Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy,” The Light and Truth of God that break through the cacophony of fear and doubt and
Psalm 63:7, “…for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.” A song we would not have sung if the storm had not driven us to seek refuge under the wings of steadfast love and faithfulness, pierced on Calvary.
Psalm 103:15-17, “As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more. But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him…” And in
Psalm 34:18, “YHWH is near to the broken-hearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” If YHWH is near to the broken-hearted, it is fitting that we ask the question, “how near?” And isn’t the only answer: “as near as can be conceived, as near as is possible…” And how near is that? Certainly the
Psalm 40:1-3, “I waited patiently for YHWH; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.”
Psalm 29:5,8,9-10, “The voice of YHWH breaks the cedars…The voice of YHWH shakes the wilderness…and in his temple, all cry, ‘Glory!’ YHWH sits enthroned as king forever.” . Matthew 27:50-51, “Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up His spirit….And the earth shook.” The voice of YHWH thunders with greatest majesty on

“There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.” – Psalm 46:4 And that City is the Bride of Christ (Ps.45:13-15; Rev. 21:2, 22:1-2). It’s interesting
